Tsukubai

Near the rear of the monks quarters in Ryoan-ji Temple is a carved stone receptacle of which water flows into. It is a small basin for visitors to purify themselves by the ritual washing of hands and rinsing of the mouth. The carved kanji translates into meaning "what one has is all one needs" and is meant to reinforce the non-materialistic teachings of Buddhism.
