Mayor of Matsuyama & Daifuku

Meet the Mayor of Matsuyama. Like any other politician, he must run for re-election.

A cool thing about being Mayor is that you get to officiate at ceremonies. This one was held at Temple Ishite-ji in February of 2006. The city officials are wearing traditional Samurai Kamishimo's (a garment worn over a kimono). They are tossing out ceremonial dried rice cakes (daifuku) filled with red bean paste, that will be toasted and eaten, by those who are lucky enough to catch any, when they get home. The crowd was quite intense when the daifuku were thrown out. It is considered good fortune to get them.

Okonomiyaki

The place that has the back end of a Volkswagen as an awning is a restaurant in Matsuyama (past the Okaido) that serves Okonomiyaki. It is a cheap place to eat at.

Okonomiyaki looks like pizza but it is more of a pancake than anything else. It consists of batter and cabbage (mixed together) that is cooked on a tapanyaki and can be topped with most anything.

The Volkswagen looks like it is a 1968-73 model from the look of the rear fender.

As you exit the Ropeway, you are greeted with the regional products of Ehime Prefecture, such as Tobeyaki Pottery, the wonderful orange juice from the hills of Ehime, the indigo cloth products which are the colors of Matsuyama and the wonderful treats available in most of the shops.

Dress up and have your picture taken against the backdrop of one of the finest castles in Japan. The castle is used for many functions including wedding parties.

Starbucks is there but the locals can find coffee and treats in the local shops.

Going up and down the Castle Hill is free if you want to walk. You can take the ropeway or chairlift if you want an easier form of ascent or descent. The chairlift is the best if you enjoy the feeling of being out there.

The gentleman who helped me around Japan was quite remarkable. He taught me how to navigate Japan's transit system so I could travel on my own. He has passed away but he is not forgotten.

The famous Tokyo Tower. Built in the 1950's to emulate Paris's Eiffel Tower. The top was bent in the famous earthquake that occurred in Japan this year. Traffic around the tower is quite congested. I almost got struck by a car in the cross walk beneath the tower because I was not paying attention.

Sakuruya Electronics in Shinjuku was a major electronics store in Japan. It opened in 1946 and was taken over by a subsidiary of Best Denki (Bic Camera).

Shinjuku is a district in Tokyo that is a combination of business, government, shopping and entertainment. It is in the center of Tokyo and is situated on the edge of the outer moat of old Edo Castle. Shinjuku means "new station" (or new inn).

Shopping in Yokohama

Taking time out from a business trip in 1995 to do some shopping in Tokyo and Yokohama. Yokohama is the second largest in Japan by population. It is close to Tokyo and is considered a major port city of Japan.

Japanese figures. Figurines are given as gifts to children at various times as they grow up. This is to signify steps in adolescence.

My favorite, Japanese wood cut prints.

This picture was taken at a store in Tokyo. The store specialized in kitchen supplies. I remember that the supplies in the store were very expensive and back in 1995, there was a favorable exchange rate on the US dollar vs. the Japanese Yen.

Taken in a Tokyo district in 1995. As a reference point, this is the day before the Kobe earthquake that occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 17, 1995. The women are wearing furisode, a style of kimono that feature long sleeves that drape down. They are also wearing zōri sandals, which are traditional formal foot wear. If you notice the young man nonchalantly smoking a cigarette on the right, it is illegal to smoke in Japan if you are under the age of consent.

As part of the compound, there is a cave, that according to legend, was dug out by Kobo Daishi himself (in seclusion). The Temple thrived in the 13th century and has ties to a sister temple in Nara.

The Japanese Imperial Palace is only open to visitors 2 days a year, January 2nd and December 23 (the Emperor's birthday). These pictures were taken in January of 1995.

Tokyo Station (located in the Marunouchi business district), a ten minute walk to the Imperial Palace, located in the heart of Tokyo. It is said to be modeled after Amsterdam Central Station. It is currently being renovated with completion expected by 2012. It was built in the Meiji Period.

As was explained to me by a Japanese gentleman who was my guide, this is the spot where hundreds of Japanese committed jisatsu after the Emperor renounced his divinity at the conclusion of World War II. He pointed to the ground we were standing on and said it was covered in blood.

The foundation of the former castle tower. It was completed in 1638 and was destroyed in 1657 in a fire that swept through Edo. It was never rebuilt. It should noted that this was a palace of the Tokugawa shogun who resided in Edo at that time. The true home of the Imperial Family resides in Kyoto.

Although it does not show in the photograph, there were (most probably still are) cranes on top of the office buildings. The Marunouchi District is the most prestigious area of Tokyo for businesses to be located at.

Kotoku-in (The Great Buddha)

These pictures are taken from a visit to Kamakura in 1995. The Great Buddha was originally built of wood, then destroyed, it was constructed again in bronze sometime in the 13th century, although the date is not exact. It was originally housed in a building but the building was destroyed by storms, war and floods (it was rebuilt after the first collapse).

The electric rail line that takes you to the Great Buddha. Notice the truck grill on the front? The ride is only about a half an hour in length. The ride itself is charming. You pass peoples backyards along the way. There are small crossing gates for pedestrian safety.

The approach is deceiving, the Buddha is much larger as you get closer.

Shinto and Buddhist Art

Shinto, which translates literally as the "Way of the Gods," is a religious system rooted in the Japanese culture's traditional sense of intimacy with nature and in its reverence for the divine ancestry of the land and its rulers. Shinto deities, called kami, are envisaged as spirits embodied by forms ranging from rocks, mountains, and waterfalls to mirrors, icons, and other objects. Certain mythical and historical figures were also regarded as kami and were represented as ancient court nobility.

Shinto emerged in response to Buddhism, which had been practiced in India for nearly one thousand years before it first came to Japan in the mid-sixth century. Buddhism is based on the teaching that life is sorrowful, because all beings are bound to an endless cycle of reincarnations. To attain release, earthly passions must be overcome through meditation and rigorous moral conduct. Buddhism spread throughout Asian in two major traditions; Theravada, stressing the achievement of spiritual enlightenment through meditation, took hold mainly in South and Southeast Asia, while a later tradition called Mahayana prevailed in Central and East Asia. Mahayana emphasized faith in Buddha and a reliance on the compassionate intercession of bodhisattvas, enlightened beings who postponed their own entrances into nirvana in order to help others achieve Buddhahood.

In 552 A.D. an envoy from Korea introduced to the Japanese court this "doctrine amongst all doctrines most excellent, but hard to explain and comprehend." Although initially opposed by the hereditary clans in charge of the shamanistic rituals of the state, Buddhism is said to have finally taken root in Japan through the efforts of Prince Shotoku (573-621).

In the ninth century, Kukai (774-835) introduced Chinese Esoteric Buddhism, with its systematic icons and elaborate doctrines centered on the Supreme Buddha Dainich (Sanskrit: Mahavairochana). During the Heian period (794-1185), Esoteric Buddhism obtained the strong patronage of both the imperial court and influential aristocrats. During the late Heian period, the doctrine of compassion accelerated the development of Pure Land Buddhism.

By the eleventh century, an assimilation of native and foreign religions had taken place, and Shinto gods were regarded as manifestations of Buddhist deities. This integration characterized Japan's later religious history and profoundly affected its art. It was not until the restoration of the imperial rule under Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) in the mid-nineteenth century that Shinto was formally separated from Buddhism.

Welcome to the one of the top ten castle's in Japan! It is also one of the few situated on top of a major hill (Katsuyama hill).

Restoration was underway but this approach is considered the most scenic view of the castle with the main building in the distance.

It seems that more Japanese own dogs than ever. This Shiba Inu is native to Japan. It is a hunting dog. While Shiba Inu's are wonderful pets, they were bred to be a hunter. Shiba Inu's are not to be let near other dogs. While this dog is small and friendly, they are all muscle and can be vicious with other pets.

An excellent movie. It is a drama centered around a love story. Its focus is Samurai warrior Munezo, who strains at keeping loyal to his Samurai beliefs and keeping his moral code intact in an imperfect world. Munezo must fight the caste system in mid 19th century Japan. Along his path Munezo must find his way, loose himself and redeem himself. It is a touching portrait of a Samurai's path to find a better life in a flawed world. While it is a Samurai film, there is only one fight scene and even the Samurai warrior is abhorred at the act of violence. This is not a glamorization of violence but an accounting of what a single act of conflict can bring to those involved and its consequences.

I have confidence that the Japanese will do their best to control this event and limit contamination. Meltdown - Remembering the Past

Three Mile Island, Middletown, Pennsylvania

It seems that Japan's Fukushima's nuclear plant is melting down. Having lived near three mile island during the 1979 meltdown, I know what that feels like. It is a horrible feeling. You cannot see radiation yet you know it is devastating. My parents sent my kid brother to live with relatives in Philadelphia for 3 months until the situation was contained. I went to work each day with a travel bag in the trunk just in case. We listened to the radio all day long waiting for notice to evacuate the area.

I was also in Japan when the Kobe earthquake occurred in 1995. While I was staying in Kawasaki at the time and felt no effects of the earthquake directly, I did see how it affected the Japanese people who had friends and family in and around Kobe. Japanese homes are built with heavy tile roofs. The homes collapsed completely under the weight of the tiles.

That is nothing compared to what is happening in Japan. The flooding and collapse of infrastructure have compounded the situation.

As part of the exhibit, visitors were invited to put together their own Totoro and place it in front of images of the backgrounds from the movie.

The exhibit itself was an in-depth look into the artwork and history of the artist, Kazuo Oga. It had the places he visited and drew inspiration for his artwork in and around the islands of Japan.

Botchan Densha or Botchan Ressha

The train is named after the novel, Botchan, written by the author Natsume Sōseki, who once lived in Matsuyama. It is called Botchan Densha (steam train) but it is not a steam train, it is electric. The locals call it Botchan Ressha. The train is a famous tourist attraction in Matsuyama. Natsume Sōseki has a stadium named after the same novel and a room in Japan's oldest hotspring, Dogo Onsen, is dedicated to his legacy.

One look at an Obi and there is no wonder why Hello Kitty came from Japan. Women sit upright and do not lean back against their Obi's when dining. An Obi is always worn properly.

Special attention is given to the Obi worn by women. The shorter style sleeves indicate the woman's marital status.

One of the finest castles in Japan and one of the few on top of a castle hill. This is the view that greets a visitor staying at the Tokyo Dai-ichi Hotel in downtown Matsuyama. If you visit this lovely city, make sure to stay at the Tokyo Dai-ichi. It is a wonderful place for the visitor.

Typical apartment living

A taxi driver once asked me if in America, if they have all their cables overhead like in Japan. My answer was yes and no. In newer developments, all the cabling is underground. The reason the Japanese don't do that is primarily due to earthquakes, I believe.

You don't own a car in Japan unless you have a place to park it. It's the law.

The museum opened its doors in 1993. It has mixed reviews. Some people don't like it, some do. It is a decent museum as it does chronicle what daily life was like in Edo. The museum does an excellent job transitioning Edo to present day Tokyo. The displays are impressive. It is a worthwhile place to visit.
