Byodoin Temple (Phoenix Hall) - Uji

The temple was originally a villa owned by Fujiwara Michinaga who was a model for the hero in the Tales of Genji. It was converted into a Temple by his son in the year 1052. It is also featured on the 10 yen coin.

Entrance way to the Temple.

The wings of the Phoenix.

The temple bell. The original is held in the exhibit hall.

The bronze bell is one of the 3 best in Japan. Photography is forbidden in the exhibit hall. Sometimes it is nice being a foreigner in Japan.

Phoenix on top of the hall. The original ones are held inside the exhibit hall.

Notice the bell shaped windows on the back of the hall or the tail of the Phoenix.
